my yahoo email was hacked into the other day, only noticed as mass emails requesting money were distributed to my contact list. the spam fictitiously stated that i was stranded in madrid, passport and wallet stolen. hurry, sent money via western union.
i assumed that everyone would realize the email was spam but given our travel schedule, i guess people wouldn't put it past me that 1)i would get stranded and 2)i would unabashedly ask for money. -my aesthetician thought it was rather "cheeky" of me to ask for money until she realized it was spam. my dad was ready to send money, his worried little heart.
it took a little bit of work to send out an email letting everyone know i was ok and for those who already figured it out, it potentially seemed a bit self-centered to say, "i'm ok. no need to send money." :) i also noticed the hackers changed the reply-to address every so slyly.
best quote from the entire incident: sometimes it's scary being on the internet.
